Project: English for Teachers 9 week language development and teaching methodology course plus classroom

observations for local English teachers in low-resources village schools in North Sumatra

Project: English Teaching Needs Analysis

Phase 1 of this large scale needs analysis consisted in the establishment of a British Council in the MoE building in Pontianak, West Kalimantan, Borneo. A team of two administrative staff were provided. During this phase, the needs assessment tools were designed and the itinerary/logistics for the 9 week visit of the 14 districts of West Kalimantan was confirmed.

Phase 2 consisted of the implementation of the English teaching needs analysis: Classroom observations; teacher interviews and questionnaires head teacher interviews; district educational officials interviews; meeting with District Governors; interviews with members of staff of the Tanjungpura University Teacher Training Department, Pontianak.

The outputs of this project were:

  • A report on the skills and needs of English primary, secondary and vocational  teachers in West Kalimantan.
  • A report on the skills and needs of English teacher trainers and the PRESET program at Universitas Tanjung Pura.
  • A report on the skills and needs of English teacher trainers responsible for INSET programs.
  • A report on the capacity and needs of head teachers in West Kalimantan with regards to language teaching.
  • A report on the capacity and needs of Head Office Ministry of Education staff with regards to the management of language teaching.
  • A report on the capacity and needs of District Offices Ministry of Education staff with regards to the management and planning of language teaching.
  • The installation of an advanced Language Teaching Self-Access Centre at Universitas Tanjung Pura.
  • A comprehensive engagement plan and logistical framework for future training of English teachers and educational staff.

 

Phase 3 consisted of the presentation of the needs analysis research findings to the major stakeholders and policy makers of West Kalimantan.

Phase 4 consisted of the data collation process and final report writing of research findings ( Report available upon request.)
